Capitol Hill, Washington: The Indian Prime Minister has hitherto received global adulation for his oratory skills but none of it could explain his phenomenal address of a joint session of US Congress at the Capitol Hill on Wednesday. Narendra Modi became a global leader by transcending the geographical boundaries of nations or the status of simply being the functional head of a state. His address was more of a statesman who is deeply aware of India and its history and never forgets his roots.
The US Congressmen were spellbound thoughout Modi’s 47 minute speech and gave 9 standing ovations along with 69 applause interventions for his extempore speech.
The address that PM Modi gave at Capitol Hill on Wednesday has gone down in global history as one of his finest speeches. Quotable quotes, humour, wit, poetry and punchlines interspersed with stern messages- his speech had every ingredient conveying all the desired messages.
In a very surreal manner, without mentioning Pakistan, PM Modi’s made a humorous jab at the US Congress for their folly of “rewarding” India’s neighbour who indulges in incubating terror, and received a grand applause for his plain-speaking.
“Distinguished members, not just in Afghanistan, but elsewhere in South Asia, and globally, terrorism remains the biggest threat.
“In the territory stretching from West of India’s border to Africa, it may go by different names, from Laskhar-e-Taiba, to Taliban to (Islamic State). But, it’s philosophy is common: of hate, murder and violence,” said Modi.
“Although its shadow is spreading across the world, it is incubated in India’s neighbourhood. I commend the members of the US Congress for sending a clear message to those who preach and practice terrorism for political gains.
The US Congress was drawn to peals of laughter when PM Modi joked that he has been informed about the US Congress was known for its “bipartisanship” and “harmony”. He further added that they were not alone, and that he has also experienced the same in Indian Parliament, especially in the Upper House.
“Mr Speaker, I’m informed that the working of the US Congress is harmonious,” Modi said as the House chamber erupted in laughter. “I am also told that you are well-known for your bipartisanship.”
“Well, you are not alone,” he said while waving a finger.
“Time and again, I have also witnessed a similar spirit in the Indian Parliament, especially in our Upper House,” he said as the gathering burst into another round of cheer.
Both supporters and opponents appreciated and applauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was at his eloquent best. India and the world witnessed the emergence and establishment of a new global leader who floored United States of America on its own turf.
