Washington: Before this week is out, India will become the 35th member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). This is not only going to be a big diplomatic victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also boost India’s credentials for the membership of the Nuclear Suppliers (NSG).
According to Reuters, the members of the MTCR have agreed to admit India to the 34-member anti-proliferation grouping. PM Modi met President Barack Obama in Washington later and discussed in detail about deepening strategic partnership between the United States and India that is rooted in shared values of freedom, democracy, universal human rights, tolerance and pluralism, equal opportunities for all citizens, and rule of law.
The deadline for the MTCR members to object to India’s admission to the group expired on Monday and under a ‘silent procedure’ India’s admission followed automatically, reported Reuters.
India got support from Switzerland for its bid to become a member of the NSG on Sunday post PM Modi’ meeting with his counterpart there.
The main opponent of India’s membership to NSG is China, whereas the US has been New Delhi’s principal backer.
To secure Mexico’s support for India’s NSG membership, PM Modi will be travelling there later this week.
