Ganga is not just a river but a mother for Indians who look forward to taking a holy dip and getting rid of all misdeeds and misfortunes.
It is believed and thus celebrated that on the auspicious day of Ganga Dussehra, Mother Ganga came down to earth from the heavens.
According to Hindu mythology, the 10th day of waxing in the middle of the month of Jaishtha, is celebrated as Ganga Dussehra.
The legend says that the holy Ganges flowed in heaven and was brought down to Earth in the form of a Goddess to purify the ashes of King Bhagiratha’s 60,000 ancestors who were killed due to a curse from the sage Kapila.
Bhagiratha, the great grandson of Sagara, prayed to Lord Brahma who asked him to pray to Lord Vishnu who in turn asked to seek Lord Shiva’s help to allow the heavenly Ganga to come down to Earth. Lord Shiva agreed to take the heavy weight of mother Ganga on his head, and the holy river then touched the ashes of the 60,000 princes and fertilised the entire region.
Since then, Ganga Dusserha is celebrated to commemorate the holy river goddess.
